Did someone say 'Draco Malfoy'?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmwM_AKeMCk
I don't know if any of you have seen this before? Some people put together a Harry Potter musical. If you don't have time to watch the whole thing, at least watch the first two parts of act 1. The opening song is probably the best the whole play has to offer. The person playing Malfoy is definitely my favourite. It has spoilers for all seven books, so if you haven't read them all and are still planning on it, keep that in mind.
I discovered it the other night while I was trying to write an essay. You can imagine how that went.

Hey, friends.
How about that weather today? It was ridiculous. Ridiculously awesome.
I tried doing NaNoWritMo this year. I capped at about 200 words, realized I was writing about something disgustingly uncomfortable and stopped. Maybe next year, ha ha.
I was a tiger for Halloween. If it was socially acceptable to wear a tail everyday, I totally would.
Alyssa and Shawn (Shaun?), your new baby is absolutely beautiful and I think you picked absolutely the perfect name. Congratulations!

11:40 pm - Can I get a couple of high fives under the table? Everyone else is getting some.
|
As a quick aside, I did not understand that joke when I first started watching Clone High. I actually thought they were all getting high fives under the table. Oh, to be 16.
ANYWAY, I mostly wanted to post because I had this weird dream last night and I wanted to document it so I could remember it at a later date.
It was open mic night at some bar or pub, and I decided I wanted to try my hand at stand up comedy. It seemed like a good idea at the time. But when I got up on stage, my nerves kicked in and I realized the last thing I wanted to do was tell jokes. So basically, the entirety of the dream is that I stood on stage talking with the audience in an attempt to put off having to actually tell a joke as long as possible. I think my subconscious kind of knew it was dreaming and just kept attempting to stall until I woke up, so I wouldn't have to be embarrassed by the terrible jokes my dream self would surely tell. Of course, now that I've had the dream in my head all day, I'd kind of like to see how I would actually do in that situation. Probably pretty terrible, but I'm sure I'd at least get one joke out before I completely wussed out. I have totally reasonable goals. I think my brain was just mocking me.
Luckily, I was saved from stand up comedy agony when I was woken up around 930 by a friend with news that West Jet was having a sale on plane tickets. Long story short, I'm going to Montreal in 2 weeks.
In summary, dreams weird, flights cheap. Zut alors! And I should probably brush up on my french.

Keep an eye on the Spectator tomorrow if you get it. I may be in there from an event we ran at school today. Also, if you get cable 14 (that's channel 23 on our cogeco cable) there may be some coverage there as well.
Our class was assigned with creating an event to partner with the Rick Hansen Foundation and their Wheels in Motion event. They battle spinal cord injury and the event gives participants the opportunity to feel what it's like to be in a wheelchair as they compete in an obstacle course. Our event was a teaser race between the Mayor of Hamilton and the President of Mohawk College. Spoiler alert, the Mayor won.
Anyway, keep an eye out!
[Edit] Nevermind with the Cable 14 thing. Turns out they only air it in Hamilton. So that's pretty sour. But still, watch for the paper!

I feel like something big is about to happen. I wish I knew what it was, but I guess the surprise is half the fun.
Happy Easter, everyone! I hope delicious chocolate rains down on you from the heavens. My Easter begins tomorrow when I hit up Zellers for the second best kind of chocolate, the discounted kind. The free kind being best of all, of course.
I think that's all for today, there's probably loads more I could write about if I put my mind to it. I'll leave you with this snippet and save that for another time.
Short and sweet, short and sweet.

Hey guys! Thanks for the happy birthday messages! It's always nice to see.
The day was pretty low-key. My cousin baked some cupcakes for my class and I hung out with some friends at the student centre and we all watched Milk. It was a really good movie. And I learned the context of the Twinkie Defense. If you've never heard of it, the man responsible for Harvey Milk's (and another man's) death was only convicted of manslaughter because his defense was able to prove that the accused's mental state was unstable partly due in part due to his increased consumption of junk food. It was a really good film, I'd recommend it. I guess it won all those oscars for a reason. Although, I do find Sean Penn insufferable most of the time.
With everything else yesterday, I managed to sneak in a two hour nap, so overall, it was a pretty successful birthday. I'm having a semi-surprise party on thursday though. It's semi-surprise, because I was told when ti was happening, I just don't know what is happening yet. Should be fun!
Weird dreams last night though. Three main ones that I remember.
One involved me hopping on a train heading west (towards BC) and my best friend jumping on a motorcycle and driving east and it was about our globe trotting adventures on opposite sides of the county. I recently read an article in the New York Times about the author's first cross-country trip on the train. He really romanticized it and made it seem like something I should try. The farthest I've taken the train is to Parry Sound and it really is preferable to flying, I think.
Second dream involved this pregnant cat that kept shooting out kittens. The grand total was 148 kittens born in one litter. It was pretty surreal. I was trying to find a place for all these kittens and when I finally did, I would turn around, there were more waiting to find places. It was a black cat and it kept popping out different varieties of kittens. There was also a pregnant dog, but she only managed to have two puppies. Which I guess brings the total of baby animals I dreamed about last night to an even 150. I guess I like neat, even numbers. Ha ha!
The third dream involved me getting shot. By my own brother. The fuck?

10:54 pm - The answer is C, you fuckwad.

I got butt-dialed today. I thought it was one of those situations you see on tv all the time, but don't actually happen in real life. Kind of like how shoulder charging a door is terribly ineffective (yet oh so smart on tv) and just asking for a huge bruise. You should kick that sucka down instead! Fun fact, I spent 15 minutes on the tv tropes wiki trying to find an example to go along with my butt-dialin' story. I did learn some cool things about ninja's though. Also, when I was butt-dialed, I didn't get to overhear any private information that should have been kept secret. I heard "Love Song" by Sarah Bareilles instead. I think I prefer the way things happen on tv.
Is it sad that this is what motivated me to update for the first time in 15 weeks? It kind of is.
I'm turning 22 on Tuesday. It's weird and I don't think I like it. It doesn't help that my older friends keep telling me that there are no important birthdays after 21 (except the big ones like 50. And who wants to be 50?). It's making me have an existential crisis. It's also making me thank God that I've got a fifth year of University on the way. I don't feel even close to prepared for real life. I know these are feelings most kids my age have so it's not original or anything, but it's fucking terrifying regardless.
Of course, since all the media outlets seem to be close to death, I probably won't have a job when I graduate anyway. Ha ha, yay journalism. I think my plan to marry once for money and then a second time for love is getting smarter and smarter each day. Though, ideally I could marry for money and love at once. Dream big?

11:42 pm - "Hey where did that homeless chick who may or may not have been Mandy Moore go?"
|
There was snow on the ground today. There wasn't a lot of it, and it was gone by noon, but it was there. That means the holidays are coming, and the semester is so close to over.
Speaking of the holidays, turns out I have a Christmas card waiting for me at home next time I'm in burlington, so thank you Alyssa and Shawn (and Paris!), I'm pretty excited to see it.
I don't think I've made a real, legitimate update since September, so I guess this has been a long time coming. Things seemed to have gone by so quickly all of a sudden, I can hardly even think of where to begin.
First thing that comes to mind is that novel writing thing some of you are working on (NaNoWriMo is it?). I'm always glad to see updates on it. I would love to try it next time. I think it could be a lot of good old fashioned frustrating fun (which is my favourite kind). It's definitely something to keep in mind for next year. Keep me posted!
College has been a definite adjustment. At times it feels like I've been forcefully thrown back into high school. I think part of it is the layout of the school. All of Mohawk College is literally found in one building. Even tiny Laurier Brantford is composed of several small buildings filled with classrooms and offices and such. The fact that there are lockers filling most hallways doesn't do much to change this illusion. Although the campus pub does fix that a little.
I think most of all, it has to do with the fact that I attend class all morning and afternoon instead of having it more dispersed throughout the day. It's funny that I had no issue with working an 11 hour day at the farmer's market, but 7 hours a day at school just seems to be too much for me to handle anymore. I guess I got spoiled by the University style, but darn it, I liked having class from 10 to 1130 and then not again until 530. It was nice.
There are a lot of small assignments to be handed in worth little amounts, as opposed to a small number of large assignments worth a hefty percentage. I remember when I was still in high school I would see that my brother would have one assignment be worth 35% or something and it terrified me that one assignment could be worth so much. Turns out that I much prefer that format. I guess I liked having to put in three nights a semester for homework a class instead of three nights a week.
In general, it's a lot easier though, so I don't really have too much to complain about. For a post-graduate program, it really isn't too labour intensive.
Oh yeah! I'm on the Laurier student newspaper, The Sputnik. I haven't had the chance to write anything yet, but I really hope to soon. And when I do... it'll be legendary.
Also... as soon as I remember how to do that cut thing again, I'll post pics from Halloween, my T-Rex costume went over so well, despite a few logistics problems. Turns out when you're not used to having something extend a 30 cm away from your face, you tend to bump into things a lot because you forget to compensate for it.

So I am back at school now. Which is really exciting... Or... at least I will expect it to be when things heat up a little. They're all very chill right now, and I don't have much to do but hang around at home.
I'll be registering at Mohawk this week to get myself all prepared for classes next week. They're making me rent a laptop for the year. It's supposed to have all the programs that we need to use on it, like photoshop and the like. It's going to be different, I think, than University is. It should be fun to see what it's like. It turns out my cousin is in the same program as I am, so hopefully I'll be hitching a ride with her, and saving myself $400 a semester in bus passes, so that's just awesome.
I don't really have anything else to say, I just wanted to give you guys a little update, and let you know I was back, for those of you who didn't. Hope everyone's September goes smoothly!

8:47 pm - Everyone! My eight inch Abe has something to say! He's in my pants!

My goodness, I feel like this summer is just flying by. It's very close to August already! I guess it's good that it's going by so quickly, because it means I'm having a good summer as opposed to a crappy one. At least I am now, that I no longer have to work that ridiculous 6 day a week schedule and actually have time for fun now. I love having time for fun!
Oh yeah! So I found a new job! I'm working at the Burlington Farmer's market Wednesday's and Friday's(and the one in Milton on some Saturdays). It's going so much better than I could have anticipated. When I first saw the posting I was pretty wary since it said I'd be working an 11 hour day (only 2 a week, and a 7 hour on Saturday), but it really does go by fairly quickly. I guess it's because I'm kept fairly busy, but I like it that way, since there's no time to sit around and think about how bored you are. One awesome thing about these long days though, is that by working 3 of them, I actually make the same amount of money I was making at the beginning of the summer by working six days (it also helps that I make more)!
I've obviously been spending much more time outside these days and I've even got myself a sweet farmer's tan! I'm really impressed that I actually haven't been burnt yet, but I guess that's because I'm in the shade most of the day.
I haven't really been doing much lately, just enjoying having a little more spare time. I've been out rollerblading a fair bit, and I'm starting to get a bit more stamina (i.e. I can make it down the street now without stopping... I was out of shape). I also went to the beach a couple weeks ago! It's really too bad there aren't really any good beaches around the Burlington area because I really think I'd go a lot more if I could. The one we went to was in Turkey Point, it was a nice place. I think my family used to go every year or so, but I think that might have been Port Dover. It doesn't really matter either way, the important thing is that there is a lack of beach in my life when there used to be a lot more, and that's a shame.
Also! I know I wussed out on the picnic last time (and I am sorry about that). But we can definitely plan another one now. I only work Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and only those days, so something that is planned on any other day would be perfect. Actually, Saturdays would work too, but I wouldn't be available until about 130 or so, I think.
I got my invitation to Paris' birthday party last week some time. It sounds really exciting and I will be there! Although, I may be slightly late, depending on when I finish at the market, but rest assured, I will be there, because it has been far too long since I've seen... well, any of you really.

I remember I made some rumblings about picnics awhile ago. And I remember the rumblings I got in reply were quite positive. I also recall that it was best to wait a couple weeks. Has it been a couple weeks yet? I think maybe it has!
Also, I still have no job, so I need something to fill up my days with. Why not some picnic-ery? I certainly don't see why not!

1:43 pm - Numbers don't Lie! "I'm a number five!"
|
So a little clarification here about yesterday's update. The restaurant I worked at decided to close down because of chef drama. Apparently they had trouble finding a permanent chef. The current guy gave his two weeks notice, but then withdrew it. Of course after all that, he had to skip out on work yesterday because of a medical issue (hurt his back, I think). Apparently the owners sat down and had a long talk and decided to eliminate the "bistro" part of Charms Bistro Cafe. So I guess that means they'll still serve coffee or something. Maybe they're just completely closing down, I kind of zoned out when he was telling me all this (dude is kind of long winded). Anyway, the end result is that I'm no longer needed, so they called me a yesterday evening and told me they were closing and I could pick up my last paycheque on friday.
I'm glad that I don't have to work there anymore, but I wanted to leave when I was ready to and had a new job lined up. Oh, and what's the deal with the short notice? I'm supposed to give two weeks before I left and they gave me none? Not cool!
So I start the job search again tomorrow.
I took the day off today just for a break. I took a long rollerblade down to Lasalle park. I wanted to play in the wading pool, but it turns out it costs $2.50 to get in, and I also figured I should have a kid with me. I need to procure a kid somewhere... I was also going to play on the swings for a bit, but there were a bunch of little kids around so I let them have it and stopped at a small park on Teal that I constantly forget about and rediscover and enjoy every time. Long story short: I got my swing on, and it was good.
I was quite impressed I made it out to Lasalle today. I haven't really bladed much in the past two years, but I've been going every day for about a week and a half, and am starting to get used to it. On the first day I barely made it 10 minutes without dying. So I'm improving! I'm trying to exercise a little more actually. I think that it's just a smart thing to do in all honesty.
Okay. Last thing. Picnics. Where? When?

Yeah, I've got nothing. I haven't seen the show for a while, so I can't come up with anything besides the obvious Wesley, or some such.
So! It is now summer-ish. I started work last month at a restaurant. Serving, mostly. With a little clean up on the side. I really don't care for it, and would love to find something else, so hopefully I can do so shortly. I usually work Monday-Saturday, and to be honest, this whole 6 day work week is much more intense than a class schedule of four days. SOUR! Anyway, I don't mind the serving aspect so much, so I may go for another restaurant job somewhere else, but for now, it's like an "anywhere but here" mentality. And that is what I'm focusing on.
One perk though. Yesterday, who should walk into the restaurant but Mme Nahmias and Ersty! How cool is that? They're both retired now, clearly, otherwise they would have been playing hooky at school by being elsewhere for lunch I guess. We got to catch up a little bit. Nahmias said my boss speaks awful french, so that was kind of cool. And Ersty called her a fuddyduddy. It. Was. Awesome!
What's everybody up to these days? I am bored... entertain me!

12:19 pm - Are you thinking what I'm thinking? MAKEOVER!/suicide
|
I do believe I have had my first experiences of lucid dreaming. The first one which, I'm not totally sure if it counts or not. I was in the middle of a nightmare (well not really, but it wasn't a pleasant situation either), and basically, I knew I wanted it to stop. What happened was I stopped myself in my tracks, and just made it all end. Oddly enough, it was kind of like a video game, where I brought up some kind of pause menu and selected the quit option. Oh well, it worked. I don't know if that counts though, because I don't think that I was conscious that it was a dream or not.
The one I had last night though, I think definitely is possible. It was kind of slight. Apparently the first few are kind of disappointing, and I found that to be the case. I definitely knew that I was dreaming. At one point I decided to test it out, so I made myself fly, because let's face it, that's just cool. And it worked, for a little bit anyway. After a while it seemed to not work anymore. So I tried to do something that was a little more simple. At this point in the dream, I was standing in my back yard, so I decided to see if I could make a soccer ball appear. It literally fell down from the sky, which just reinforced the fact for me that I was dreaming. Afterward, I couldn't really do anything else. One thing that stood out though, was how vivid everything was. It all seemed so much clearer to me the morning after than usual. I'm not sure if that's normal, or just a coincidence, but I'm glad it happened anyway.
You know how there's the cliche that you pinch yourself in a dream because you don't feel pain? Yeah, that's totally fake. I tried walking barefoot down the road. It was not a fun time.
Anyway, like I said, the first few are supposed to be disappointing, and this kind of was. Hopefully it will happen again and will be better. Fingers crossed!
P.S. I love summer!

I am home(skillet). Finished yesterday got picked up today. It's a good feeling, that's for sure!
I think it's time for me to buy my first cellphone. My roommate (understandably) doesn't want to pay for two phone bills when she gets all her calls on her cell, so I figured it's probably my time. The thing is... I have no clue what do look for. For those of you who do have one, what kind of plan/phone did you get? Do you find it works for you. I'm kind of in the dark here. Help a brotha out!

12:31 am - Clumsy, Joan, real clumsy
|
So I am down to one exam left (celebrate!)! Technically, I should be done already, but darn Laurier scheduled two of my exams at the same time so they had to postpone one (which... actually doesn't bother me that much since it spread all my exams out kind of nicely). I'm writing my Popular Culture exam, and it's the one I'm most worried about (though, I rocked the midterm, so I should be fine). Most of my exams haven't been that difficult yet. My Interviewing and Reporting Prof gave us all the questions ahead of time, so it was just a matter of memorizing answers that were mostly common sense anyway (interviewing isn't really all that complicated). My Children's Literature and Children, Toys, and Media prof (two different classes, same teacher), pretty much gave us everything we needed to know, terms and what not. Children, Toys, and Media took me six minutes... SIX minutes to write the final exam, so no complaints there. My Disease and Society exam could have been worrisome, but the prof dropped some heavy hints. It was a lot of writing, but it went absolutely fine. We'll have to see with this next one though. It could be a doozy, it may not. Wish me luck!
I just stumbled across some information about lucid dreaming today. It's really interesting stuff. Just in case you've never heard the term before (I hadn't until now), it's basically when you're conscious that you're dreaming. In some cases this allows you to control your dreams and do things you wouldn't normally be able to. It's something that I'd like to try. Apparently it's mostly a case of mind over matter, but there are certain steps you can take to increase the odds of yourself being in a lucid state when you sleep (such as keeping a dream journal, or waking up and going back to sleep). I really like the idea of having total freedom over something, even for a couple of hours. For the past week since I haven't had to get up super early for class, I've just been keeping my alarm off and allowing myself to wake up. I already enjoy the fact that I get all the sleep my body wants, but I've been remembering more of my dreams lately too. They've all been pretty silly, and mostly seem to involve me creating something (one night I wrote a sad little song, and another night I wrote an entire episode of Scrubs). But it's fun to remember these things. I think I might start keeping a dream record or something, because even if I don't get the lucid dreaming part down, I always like remembering dreams.
If you would like to learn more about lucid dreams, consult your local Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucid_dream
My roommate has the newest Smash Bros game for Wii. It's a lot of good fun. Makes me kind of want a Wii so I can play it more often.
